A digital companion for those recovering from injuries & surgeries.
A self-initiated case study.
Being consistent with physical therapy exercises after a surgery or injury is a critical part of the recovery journey. Often life shifts significantly with the addition of appointments with healthcare providers and the adjustment or suspension of once-daily activities and routines. Our solution walks with users on this journey while providing valuable data to medical researchers.

  • We were given details for a user persona and data that would be gathered from users for medical research via a mobile app.
  • My main areas of responsibility were sourcing an image and writing a bio for the user persona, and many of the high-fidelity components (incl. homescreen, calendar, data entry sections, images & microcopy).
  • We shaped a user persona then visualized the app via the user flow and task flow. Low-fidelity designs were created and iterated upon to produce high fidelity wireframes.
  • Our app (REvive) simplifies data input to encourage users to consistently log a variety of details. Increased data input means more data to available for medical researchers.

The Brief

Our task was to design a mobile app that would help users remember to do their physical therapy exercises after an injury or surgery while also gathering data for medical research.

The brief included some details for a user persona and specified the data that would be gathered for researchers. After developing the persona fully, we needed to move through ideation into low fidelity and high fidelity wireframes. We chose to design for iOS.

How We Work
Our UX Team was composed of myself and Herman Dahl. We each took responsibility for different portions of the project and worked in close collaboration throughout the process including the proposed solution.

The Process

Picture

User Persona
Picture

User Flow
  • The user flow focuses on Chris who is registering to use the app for the first time. We use an error modal (immediate feedback) to inform users if the information entered doesn’t meet the requirements before they’ve pressed submit.
Picture

Information Architecture (IA)
  • Injury recovery journeys are difficult physically and can also be challenging emotionally especially for someone like Chris whose identity is shaped by his involvement in sports/fitness. It is key that the app structure encourages and supports Chris rather than overwhelm him.
Picture

Low Fidelity Wireframes
  • We prioritized efficiency in both navigation and data input in an effort to encourage our user persona Chris to use the app daily.

Sign-up/log-in is based on common design patterns so it's familiar.

Data input is streamlined by employing recognition rather than recall.

A variety of information is displayed while avoiding unnecessary clutter.

Cards organize the exercise and meditation content.

The Solution

High Fidelity Wireframes
  • The move to high-fidelity was seamless as much of the layout and navigation was refined in low-fidelity. A fresh color palette is complemented well by data visualization elements inspired by the iOS health app.
Picture
The sign-up/log-in layouts stay the same in high-fidelity.

Homescreen bento box options expand to clarify & simplify navigation.
Picture
Minor changes increase negative space between data summary bars and data entry card sections.
Picture
Unnecessary elements were removed from the upper section of the Exercise screen.

The way forward

  • The next step would be to create a functional prototype using the high fidelity wireframes and conduct usability testing with participants similar to our user persona.
