Creating a companion app for those recovery from injuries & surgeries.
A self-initiated case study.
Being consistent with physical therapy exercises after a surgery or injury is a critical part of the recovery journey. Often life shifts significantly with the addition of appointments with healthcare providers and the adjustment or suspension of once-daily activities and routines. Our solution walks with users on this journey while providing valuable data to medical researchers.

  • Our team was provided with details for a user persona and data that would be gathered from users for medical research. We used this as a foundation to develop a persona and a relevant solution.
  • My main areas of responsibility were sourcing an image and writing bio for the user persona, rough sketches of the app and many of the high-fidelity components (incl. the homescreen layout, calendar, data entry sections, data summary sections, images & microcopy).
  • Steps we took.
  • Our app (ReVive)-- discuss main features.

The Brief

Our task was to design a mobile app that would help users remember to do their physical therapy exercises after an injury or surgery while also gathering data for medical research.

The brief included details for a user persona and specified the data that would be gathered for researchers. We fully developed the persona then moved through ideation and into prototypes.

We chose to design for IOS.

How We Work
Our UX Team was composed of myself and Herman Dahl. We each took responsibility for different portions of the project and worked in close collaboration throughout the process including the proposed solution.

The Process

User Persona
Picture

User Flow
  • The brief focuses on Chris who is registering to use the app for the first time. Our user flow tracks this first contact with the app. We use an error modal (immediate feedback) to inform users if the information they enter doesn’t meet the requirement before they’ve pressed submit.

Information Architecture
  • Injury recovery journeys are difficult physically but can also be challenging emotionally especially for someone like Chris whose identity is shaped by his involvement in sports/fitness. The information architecture and the subsequent discussions in our team underscored the need for the app structure to encourage and support rather than overwhelm Chris.

Sketches
  • Filter modal stalled multiple times.
  • Results in Mexico shown when user searched for California.
  • Frustration with budget slider and back button.
  • Map was clicked accidentally, this narrowed results.
  • Flexible dates defaulted to 5 nights.
  • Struggled with breakfast filter; mentioned their ADD.
  • Difficulty using flexible dates filter.
  • Breakfast filter not found.

Low Fidelity Wireframes
  • The brief shows (find better phrasing here) that injury recovery journeys are difficult physically but can also be challenging emotionally especially for someone like Chris whose identity is shaped by his involvement in sports/fitness.

The Solution

Navigation between search results and listings:
  • A modal in the style of other airbnb.com modals appears when the user lands on the search results page. A dark grey skrim obscures the search results and ensures the user focuses on this important information.
  • The text explains the navigation between a listing and the search results while a brief video on a loop illustrates this.
  • The user can close the modal using the X in the top right.
Picture

Search & Filter Wizard
  • The user begins the search process as usual entering dates, location and guest information.
  • Once the user presses search they are navigated to the search results pages with a filter modal over the screen.
  • The wizard interface (multi-step form) on the left side of the modal displays user progress and indicates whether a filter has been chosen for each step.
  • Once the user completes or exits the wizard, search results are updated.

The way forward

  • The next step would be to collaborate with product managers and developers to prepare an estimate of the work involved to take this concept from prototype to finished product.
  • These estimates of required resources along with our findings would then be presented to all relevant stakeholders for approval.
